The curriculum Clearly Innovative developed the past semester for Startup Middle School has been condensed into a two-week session and the students are responding to it quite well. The kids attending the 2014 Startup Middle School Summer Institute are getting a crash course in mobile development and entrepreneurship in this STEM based technology program.
From creating user personas to wireframing to coding, the students have embraced the class exercises fully and are excited to learn more. It’s gratifying to see the genuine spark of interest in the ones who aren’t familiar with programming & design. We try to foster in them the importance of teamwork but also strengthen their skills as individuals. The tools we utilize help to keep the children engaged and open their minds to mobile development concepts which can serve them well in their professional and academic endeavors.
Moving into the last week of camp, the students will continue learning how to code and also how to present and pitch their mobile app ideas. One of the more rewarding things I’ve witnessed in the classroom is how quickly the students learn to collaborate with one another and team build around their ideas. In addition to last week’s trips to Capitol Hill and Howard University science labs, the students will be visiting the Kaiser Permanente Innovation Center and the National Geographic Museum to see how technology powers all kinds of industries.
